Abstract: In Joyce’s view, from the end of the nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century the common Irish living in the colonial cultural context are unable to free themselves from their existential dilemma whatever they att, empt to do. They are all afflicted by an aeipathia of spiritual “paralysis,” over which Joyce has an intense anxiety. Therefore, he feels it his artistic mission and moral duty to lay bare in the form of literature such a chronic disease so as to awaken his countrymen from their torpor. This essay, through a close textual analysis of “Sisters” and “Grace” in Dubliners, draws the following conclusion: what Joyce reveals in his collection of short stories is actually the paralysis of the Irish national psychology; Joyce’s anxiety over this spiritual paralysis has its social, historical and cultural roots, therefore his anxiety is in essence an anxiety of culture.

Key words: Joyce; “The Sisters”; “Grace”; spiritual paralysis; anxiety of culture
