Abstract: From the late Ming Dynasty to the Mid-Qing Dynasty, vernacular stories written by literati writers were popular for a time, and a large number of such authors emerged. Inspecting these literati from the perspective of "group", we can find that they are faced with the "sandwiched" mentality in the aspects of identity, value identity and daily life experience. This dilemma leads to the wandering of self-cognition and continuous self-explanation, which gives birth to a generally negative, subjective and exaggerated writing style that reflects the anxiety of the literati's spiritual world. The relevant discrimination is helpful to understanding the significance of the literati authors in promoting the vernacular stories in the Ming and Qing dynasties from a new perspective.
