Abstract: In the process of the modernization of Chinese philosophy, there is a kind of sentimentalist approach. And the development of this philosophical approach has generally gone through three stages: the embryonic and budding stage from the middle of the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the transitional stage of the Republic of China and the stage of conscious development since the end of the 20th century. The core theoretical issues and manifestations of the three development stages are: “the discussion about Li (理, the Heaven Law) and Yu (欲, human desires)” which treats emotion and desire as theoretical basis, transition from “the discussion about Li and Yu” to the “the discussion about Qing (情, emotion) and Li (理, reason)” and the establishment of “the discussion about Qing and Li” as the theoretical basis. Correspondingly, its modernistic cultural appeals and propositions are clearly manifested in the three stages of radical breakthrough, blunt grafting and thorough development. The future development of the sentimentalist approach of Chinese philosophy should further deepen the “the discussion about Qing and Li” from the perspective of interdisciplinary, and pay more attention to the survival and development of both China and the whole mankind. |
