Abstract: When We Were Orphans, the representative novel of the contemporary Japanese-born British writer Kazuo Ishiguro, is set in the Shanghai foreign settlements where the imperialist Britain and Japan met. Through a diasporic perspective, the novel reconstructs the 1930s China under the double invasion of British opium trade and Japanese military aggression. Characters in the novel are individuals involved in the historical events with historical significance. Based on a close-reading of the historical context of the novel, this essay analyzes the personal stories of Banks, Diana and Akira with the conclusion that, from the characters’ relative positions of being the center as well as the marginal, the novel reproduces the colonization history of China repressed by western scholars and criticizes the UK and Japan’s evil invasion of China.
