Kazuo Ishiguro’s writing of historical trauma

MEI Li

(School of Law, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai 200083, China)

Abstract: Kazuo Ishiguro is a master of writing historical trauma.  Instead of describing the historical events in a realistic manner, he seeks for the inner truth in the fate and feelings of the individuals who suffer from traumatic historical events. In the novels of An Artist of the Floating World, When We Were Orphans, and The Remains of the Day, he develops special narrative strategies to reveal the impact of the historical events on the individuals and their spiritual dilemma, namely, the multiple projections of “I”, digressive narration and contradictory narration. His works offer us an enlightening perspective to reflect on our history, moral obligations and self value.
