The influence of early modern geography on John Milton: a preliminary study

HUANG ChiaYin

(Department of English Language & Literature, Chinese Culture University, Taipei 11114, China)

Abstract: Geography is one of the newly-emerged fields of knowledge Milton has taken interest in. Milton considers geography as an essential part of the liberal education and continues to track the latest development of map publications. His concern of geography is also reflected in his poetic works such as Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. In Paradise Lost, Milton compares Satan’s expedition and experience to those of a European fleet traveling between the Spice Islands and the European Continent through the Cape of Good Hope in the hope of gaining profits from the space trade. Such a comparison in the similes produces an intertextual criticism that goes both ways: from the trade fleet to Satan and from Satan to the trade fleet. This shows that geography has played an important part in Milton’s thoughts and works and therefore deserves our further attention.
