Culture-specific item translation and
the translator’s cultural awareness
—A case study of the two English versions of the
translation of “Red” in Hong Lou Meng

TU Guoyuan, ZHOU Hui

(School of Foreign Languages, CSU, Changsha 410075, China)

Abstract:  The translation of culture-specific items has never been a cut-and-dried matter of simple code-switching between two different languages. It, in fact, embodies the positive role of cultural construction on the part of the translator. And the impact of the translator’s cultural awareness and reader’s awareness is believed to be pervasive and penetrating. Take the translation of “red” in Hong Lou Meng for instance, Hawkes chose to render it into “green” and “golden”, the colors that are more familiar to the English speaking nations, to facilitate the reception of the translation, whereas the Yangs were inclined to resort to literal translation to preserve the unique cultural connotations of “red” to convey a taste of exoticism.

Key words:  the translation of culture-specific items; translator’s subjectivity; cultural awareness; reader awareness; Hong Lou Meng
