从外语专业文学教学看高等教育的“用”与“知”

摘  要: 文章串联高等教育中的3个相关的问题:文学教学无用还是有用?外语专业是工具学科还是人文学科?高校应以“学以致用”还是“学以致知”为基本理念?并递进式地讨论文学教育的功效问题,外语专业的学科定位问题,以及高校的办学基本理念问题。以英语学科为例,讨论实用主义对文学教学的影响,说明外语专业人文性的特征,强调人文素质培养的重要性,指出加强诸如文学这类“非应用”课程比重,是今后外语专业改革的一个重要方面。

The Knowledge/Tool Controversy in Higher Education:Literature Teaching in Discipline of Foreign Languages

Abstract: In this paper, the author attempts to probe into 3 interrelated questions: What is the “use” of literature? What is the nature of discipline of Foreign Languages? How are we to understand the ultimate purpose of higher education? Starting from these points, the paper looks into the problems of marginalization of literature in discipline of Foreign Languages and analyzes the characteristics of the two different understandings regarding Foreign Language as an independent discipline – seeing it as “tools” or as an area of humanity study, and believes that this understanding lies at the root of the curricular differences. The author reiterates the importance of humanistic education and the “non-pragmatic” courses such as literature.
