--试析贾尔斯对卡尔斯罗普《孙子》译本的误读 |

| 摘 要： 复译将竞争机制引入同一部书的翻译，同一名著的不同译者之间存在着争夺读者、争夺市场及争夺翻译史地位的竞争。作为最有影响的中国古代军事典籍，《孙子兵法》以其文本的开放性与召唤结构邀约着众多译者解读，其中英文译者即多达数十位，译者间的竞争极为激烈。卡尔斯罗普是最早将《孙子兵法》译入英语世界的译者，紧随其后的的贾尔斯对其译本百般挑剔，提出了“近乎无礼的”批评。这种批评本质上是后世译者对前驱译本的误读，其目的在于扭转竞争中的迟到劣势，廓清自己的阐释空间。 |

Fierce Competition between Peers: A tentative analysis on Giles’s misreading Calthrop’s Translations of The Art of War |

| Abstract: Retranslation introduces competition into the translation of the same book, thus competition exists among different translators of the same literary classics for readers, for market and for positions in translation history. As China’s foremost ancient military study, The Art of War has appealed to translators to interpret the meaning of the text with its openness and response-inviting structure, and its English translators amounted to some dozens, making the competition much more fierce. E.F. Calthrop pioneered to translate The Art of War into English world, and the subsequent Lionel Giles found faults with Calthrop’s translations, criticizing them tastelessly. Such criticism, in nature, reflects the fact that later translators always misread the precursor’s translations with the purpose of reversing their disadvantageous lateness in the competition and clearing the interpretation space for themselves. |
