On the Paradox of John Milton’s Theology on Temptations

WU Lingying

(School of Foreign Language, Central South University, Changsha 410083, China)

Abstract: According to Milton’s theology, temptations may lead to fall, yet constitute the critical trials in tempering Christian heroes. This parodox of his is first elaborated in his De Doctrina Christiana, and then artistically interpreted in his poetical trilogy. Satan’s temptations in Paradise Lost trigger the history of human sufferings, yet Adam and Eve’s Fortunate Fall animates the human heroic quest for “the Spirit within.” Jesus in Paradise Regained, by recapitulating Adam’s being tempted, yet by resisting this time, thus regaining the lost paradise, functions as the prototype of Christian heroes. Dalila in Samson Agonistes, apart from being the direct cause of Samson’s Fall, serves as Samson’s Mirror Image and the impetus of Samson’s Regeneration. Samson from the fallen to the regenerated may best exemplify Milton’s paradoxical theology on temptations.
