| Abstract: In the early philosophical context, there remains considerable scope for analyzing the emergence and construction of the concept of “Xing” (Nature). In the pre-philosopher era, theories concerning it were predominantly characterized by “Jie Xing” (Regulated Nature), a form of normative ethics manifested as practical methods aligning with “virtuous conduct”. In this context, “Xing” did not possess an independent theoretical status. The statements of Confucius and his subsequent disciples scarcely diverged from the realm of “Jie Xing.” However, through their interpretations, “Xing” gradually began to exhibit an “internal” implication, thereby forging a connection with the concept of “Xin” (Mind). The philosophy of Mencius propelled the evolving notion of “Xin-Xing”(Mind-Nature), towards a mature form, creating a brand-new philosophical context that elevated “Xing” to an independent category of inquiry. This represents a significant contribution of the study of Mind-Nature to the construction of pre-Qin moral philosophy. |
