Abstract: Legendary works of the Tang Dynasty, which involve love and marriage, inevitably face the problem of describing erotic scenes, some of which are brushed aside, some of which are subtle and euphemistic, while others are simple and rude. Well-known classic love legends, such as Biography of Huo Xiaoyu and Biography of Yingying, are characterized by beautiful and tactful writing. Another kind of works, such as Youxian Cave, which has a strong erotic meaning, have gorgeous language and are full of teasing, while Biography of Hejian, which has been criticized, is famous for being straightforward and explicit. From the standpoint of Confucian ethics, whether it’s the romantic and exotic You Xian Cave, the vulgar and explicit Biography of Hejian, or Biography of Huo Xiaoyu, which praises love, all of them are “erotic” works, manifesting a tendency to break through the etiquette order in the description of the relationship between men and women. According to the process of the history of thoughts in Tang Dynasty, under the influence of the process of thought history, such as the knowledge of sexual intercourse and medicine, the integration of Taoism, and the introduction of Tantric Buddhism into China, the concept of combining men and women broke through the shackles of Confucian ethics and returned to the human nature of food and sex. In the legendary works about men's and women’s love and marriage, there is no need to deliberately avoid the writing of erotic scenes. Instead, different artistic techniques should be employed to express them so as to display a vivid picture of social life in Tang Dynasty to future generations.
