| Abstract: Throughout history, readers have constructed various hearsays about the author, creation, skills, and dissemination of A Dream of Red Mansions. This type of hearsay adopts a narrative pattern of first quoting and then evaluating, intentionally or unintentionally gathering various information from A Dream of Red Mansions, forming a mixed form of rational and irrational gossip-style social public opinion. This reflects taste, attitude, and habits of rumor mongers when reading A Dream of Red Mansions, and expands the cognitive perspective of A Dream of Red Mansions in various narrative recollections of the rumor mongers, showcasing the diverse possibilities of the rumor mongers' reading imagination. From the perspective of reading history research, hearsay as a form of reading construction increased the possibility of discussion among various groups of people at that time. This kind of research can not only restore the typical details of the observation and reading of A Dream of Red Mansions, but also extract the image and value of A Dream of Red Mansions in secular society. In short, this move has important methodological implications for examining the widespread phenomenon of rumor construction in the dissemination of ancient Chinese popular novels. |
