Abstract: In the debate between the Rawlsians and the proponents of global distributive justice, global distributive justice faces two challenges. The first is whether there exists a "background structure" in the global world (world of peoples) which is comparable to the "basic structure" in the domestic society. Rawls and his followers emphasise the "political culture" of the domestic society while denying such a comparability. As a result, they see no reason in applying principles of distributive justice globally. Secondly, as to what institutions are needed for applying the principles of distributive justice globally, the proponents of global distributive justice have some inadequacy. In this regard, the proponents of global distributive justice can respond to these challenges better with the help from the world-systems theory. The world-systems theory can help to refute the Rawlsians' "political-culture perspective", thus confirming the comparability between the domestic "basic structure" and global "background structure". At the same time, world-systems theory's programme for transforming the "world-system" can supplement system assumption by the proponents of global distributive justice and make up for the current inadequacy. |
