Abstract: Under the influence of early binary opposition thinking, Han Confucianism focused more on observing the diachronic significance of "quality of literature"(Wen-Zhi), applying it to politics and creating the theory with quality of literature cycling that points to correct the defectives by increasing or decreasing one of the benefits. This approach of prioritizing the quality of literature has long influenced the expressing ways of Wen-Zhi theory. During the Wei and Jin dynasties, translation of Buddhist scriptures connected the metaphysical Wen-Zhi theory with the specific translation practice, disclosing the problem of observing the literature with the old view of Wen-Zhi theory, making the harmony of Wen and Zhi at the synchronic level a pressing task. Subsequently, the two forms of Wen-Zhi theory were integrated in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons: synchronic and diachronic, in which Liu Xie further clarifies the two extremes of quality and literature and their connection with "emotion" at the synchronic level, takes “emotional literature” as the Tao of literary creation, puts forward value judgement of “emotion” from the perspective of literary artistry. In this way, he compromised with the Quality School while affirming the artistry of literature, ultimately enriching the connotation of the literary theory of Wen and Zhi. |
