Abstract: In the recent decade, non-fiction writing has become one of the most prominent literary trends in China. As a witness involved in this trend and experiencing it in person, Ding Yan is a representative, holding exemplary value. On the basis of her cultural migration and experiences as a worker, she has developed a unique style of individuality, sensibility, spirituality, cultural horizon, and detailed narration. First of all, she observes and senses the living state of the individual and secretive pains from a microscopic perspective. Through close and long-lasting observation of particular behaviors of the individual, she amplifies and penetrates the relationship between the living state of contemporary people and the times they live in. Secondly, she ponders over the divergence and convergence between the north and the south of China from the cultural standpoint, observing the cultural differences from the conflicts between traditional and modern civilizations and presenting the mixed social state from the perspective of cultural comparison between the old and the new. Finally, she diagnoses the western civilization and the modern syndromes from the view of the Other. By combining the internal and external horizons and by transforming the local knowledge of West China into a modern discourse, she discloses the invasion of modern civilization and alienation of modern people. In artistic terms, she adopts emotionally subtle language and avante-guarde expressions, boasting of a unique sense of beauty out of being both real and visionary. |
