Abstract: Milton’s L’Allegro and Il Penseroso are remarkable poems written in his youth. The speakers in these two poems respectively represent the two different life styles of “Mirth” and “Melancholy.” Their attacks at each other and their debates remind us of the tradition of medieval debate poetry. The Owl and the Nightingale, in particular, resembles Milton’s sister poems in both their contents and their narrative styles. The present essay is a comparative study of Milton’s sister poems and The Owl and the Nightingale. The analysis of their resemblances shows that in the seventeenth century, the tradition of medieval debate poetry still exerts great influence on John Milton’s poetic creation. |
