辜鸿铭论儒家道德文明

摘  要: 在近代西方文明话语霸权的背景下,辜鸿铭以道德与文明的关系为逻辑起点,提出文明的本质为“道德标准”的观点。在中西文明比较视域中,辜鸿铭认为西方现代文明缺乏一个高尚的道德根基,在19世纪商业主义的侵蚀下,西方自由主义文明已蜕化成一种“物质实利主义文明”;而儒家文明以“道德责任感”为道德根基,将道义置于利益之上,是一个有着合理道德根基的成熟的文明。辜鸿铭对儒家文明道德本质及其现代价值的阐发,对我们今天反思儒家道德文明的价值深具启发意义,但其文明观体现出道德本位主义倾向,是一种重德轻力、重义轻利、重精神轻物质的有失偏颇的文明观。

Ku Hongming’s research on the moral civilization of Confucian

Abstract: On the background of western civilization dominating in the modern world, Ku Hong-Ming proposed an idea that the essence of civilization was a moral criterion, which began from the logical relationship between moral and civilization. In a comparative view of the Confucian Civilization and the Western Modern Civilization, Ku Hong-Ming thought that the Western Modern Civilization was lack of a noble moral foundation, and under the influence of commercialism in 19th century, the western Liberalism Civilization had become a Materialistic Civilization; but the Confucian Civilization was based on “moral responsibility”, and it put interests after morality, which was a mature civilization with a reasonable moral foundation. Ku Hong-Ming’s analysis of the moral essence and modern value of Confucian reflected his deep understanding of moral reason of Confucian, which enlightens us to reflect the value of the Confucian today. But Ku Hong-Ming’s point of civilization reflects a moral departmentalism tendency, he paid much more attention on morality and spirit than on power and material, which is a biased view of civilization.
