Abstract: “Garden of Eden” is a symbol of the paradise. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the United States was Jews’ paradise. In Seize the Day, Dr. Adler is God’s incarnation, and Wilhelm is Adam. Like Adam, Wilhelm had been expelled from the Garden of Eden as a result of rebelling against his father/God. Dr. Adler is the embodiment of moral individualism. He constantly maintains personal interest-money. The result of the moral conflict is that individual interests overrode affection. The Eden has a profound irony in the novel. While Wilhelm belives he is superior to his father who only worshipes money in morality, the fact is that the assimilated Dr. Adler continues to enjoy the happy life in the Eden, Wilhelm who cherishes traditional Jewish moral consciousness is expelled. The novel is of strong critical significance. |
